Impromptu Photography for The Tide's 2017 Calendar

Back in February last year I flew out to LA to Direct The Tide's first Music Video, Young Love. The budget was very tight, and included in it was flights/hotels and more, that left me with a minimal crew and having to shoot on my own cameras, but what I did get was two days with the band. Once we realised that that gave us some extra time in the day (everything was scheduled to be shot at sunset and sunrise to get the best natural light) we scheduled a photo shoot to fill some time.

The shoot would take place in the Venice Beach area of Santa Monica straight after we'd shot a scene where the band arrive at the beach in their car. As I was out of money (all spent on the video) I was fighting against the sun with my off camera Yongnuo flash, not ideal, i've left it in a few of the shots so you can see just how small yet powerful that light is. I attached a magnetmod bounce to it to soften it slightly and away we went.

You can see Kevin, my gaffer, holding the flash and bounce attachment just on the left of the frame above.

At the time all I needed was to make sure I had a cover image shot for the single, the record label didn't really request anything else from the shoot, but I made sure we had enough variation incase they wanted more options for anything else. I guess they did. There's a few t-shirts on the bands merchandise store, and of course, the 2017 official band calendar (incidentally, the photo for the background of The Tide's merch store was taken by me on my iPhone 5 in 2013!). Whilst everyone ate lunch, myself and Paul, my producer, headed off and found about 6 locations within walking distance I could shoot. I picked the spot and Paul made a record so we wouldn't forget any. There's a few photo's below from the shoot and also a few shots of the calendar (yes, i bought one!)
